What is Yoga?
“Yoga is defined as a mindbody practice comprised of physical postures (asanas), breath work, meditation, and relaxation. Through the teaching and practice of yoga, yoga teachers facilitate an experience of positive embodiment that promotes mindful awareness, self-regulation, and physical fitness”
-Dr. Catherine Cook-Cottone, Mindfulness and Yoga for Self-Regulation (p.283).
Why yoga?
Yoga offers both physical and mental benefits for people of all ages. Regular yoga practice improves strength, balance, and flexibility, promotes mental clarity and calmness, and relieves chronic stress patterns. With yoga, students can also better understand their internal experience, which can help them self-regulate and become more grounded and centered. Increased body awareness and the ability to anchor in the present moment creates a deeper mind-body connection and allows for more effective healing and recovery to take place.
How is this different than regular yoga?
This yoga is based in a trauma-informed and therapeutic approach offering a distinct and supportive environment to promote healing and holistic well-being. The facilitator of this class (Sierra Moye, RMHCI, RYT) has a background in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, and trauma-informed modalities. Anyone seeking improved self-awareness-and-regulation, mental clarity, and mind-body connection can benefit from this class.
